ROMANESQUE ART AND MUCH MORE...

Art

The location of Hoya de Huesca as a meeting point between the Pyrennean foothills and the plain that extends towards the valley of the Ebro has given this region a sense of being a land where, throughout history, cultures and ways of life have merged. With the Reconquest of the 11th Century, the previous cultural division faded, creating an extended period of coexistence while still preserving the cultural roots that mark the natural and geographical surroundings of the villages.

Apart from the important monuments in the capital, there is no doubt that the Romanesque is the predominant style in La Hoya de Huesca. There are countless buildings to discover throughout the area, such as the Collegiate church of Bolea or the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, and you can take an interesting tour through the innumerable hermitages scattered throughout our region, such as the Hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña in Aniés, the Hermitage of Santiago in Agüero, the Hermitage of San Martín de la Val d'Onsera, the Hermitage of the Virgen de los Dolores in Monflorite, the Hermitage of Santa María in Concilio, ...

THREE STARS MICHELIN SAY IT ALL

Gastronomy

Huesca knows how to place itself on the gastronomic map as one of the must-visit cities in order to enjoy its excellent repertoire of specialities.

Fresh produce from the land forms the basis of enjoyable cooking. The market gardens of Huesca, good quality livestock and the wine cellars of Somontano provide basic produce of the highest quality, and this has contributed to the three Michelin stars awarded to Las Torres, Lillas Pastia and Tatau Bistro.

Traditional dishes include Migas a la Pastora (breadcrumbs Shepherdess-style), Oscense or Garlic soup, Cardoon in Almond Sauce, Salmorrejo (tomato and bread soup), Chicken and pepper stew, Lamb Shepherdess-style, Chiretas (a type of haggis) and without a doubt, the star dish, which is Roast Lamb.

And talking of desserts, various specialities are well-known at a national level, such as the Almudévar Braid (pastry with fruit filling), Glorias de Huesca (flaky pastry cakes), Tarta de Loreto (almond cake), Pastel Ruso (Praline cake) or the delicious marzipan chestnuts.

LAND OF ADVENTURE

Sports

The entire region of Hoya de Huesca is a magical natural paradise for taking part in adventure sports.

The Gállego River, with descents of between two and three hours in length, offers its wild waters to practice sports such as rafting or kayaking. Fun and lots of excitement are guaranteed.

The rock formations of the Mallos de Riglos and Agüero are some of the best climbing areas in Europe and offer a fantastic environment in which to enjoy this sport. The Natural Park of the Sierra de Guara is internationally-recognised as one of the best places for practicing canyoneering.

Furthermore, our skies and mountains are favourable for paragliding, and our lands and forests are ideal for trekking, all-terrain biking and horse riding.

A PROTECTED NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

Nature

The region of La Hoya de Huesca is situated in the intermediate area of High Aragon, framed by the pre-Pyrennean mountains of Santo Domingo, Loarre, Caballera, Gratal and Guara to the north and the southern plains, precursors to the Monegrina Steppes to the south. This transitional position guarantees a high degree of natural diversity.

The geological formations known as "Mallos" are characteristic of this area, and include the Mallos de Riglos, Agüero and Murillo in the surroundings of the Gállego River, and the Mallos del Salto de Roldán and Vadiello in the Sierra de Guara Natural Park.

Our skies are frequented by birds of prey such as the griffon vulture, the white tailed kite and the lammergeier, as well as by aquatic birds that stop here on their migration routes through the peninisula.

The whole area is scattered with fields of almonds and cherries which, during their flowering season, put on a real spectacle with their unmistakeable white flowers.
