The DPH supports the declaration of Loarre Castle as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Loarre Castle is one of the most outstanding examples of Romanesque military architecture in Spain. Built in the 11th century, it not only represents a milestone in the history of defence during the Reconquista, but is also a symbol of Aragonese cultural identity.
As stated in the institutional motion approved today at the plenary session of the DPH, one of the main arguments for proposing the declaration of Loarre Castle as a UNESCO World Heritage Site lies in its exceptional architectural value. Furthermore, on a historical level, it is of great relevance in the defence of the Kingdom of Aragon. The inclusion of Loarre Castle on the World Heritage list would contribute to its preservation and promotion, favouring sustainable tourism development in the province.
For this reason, the Provincial Council’s proposal urges the Government of Spain to propose to the World Heritage Committee that, at its next meeting, it declare the Romanesque fortress as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Santa María In Foris
The plenary session of the DPH has also approved an initiative to maintain the heritage of the church of Santa María In Foris, which it owns. The deterioration of the works of art inside makes it necessary to restore and preserve the altarpiece of San Agustín and the other canvases distributed throughout the rest of the nave. The Provincial Council will invest 15,000 euros in these works.
In addition, the DPH will also undertake the replacement and grating of two windows in the temple and the replacement of some glass to guarantee the maintenance of this church.
